Visiting the recent useR! 2025 conference reminded me how awesome the R community is and how much we missed in the past months by not meeting at local events, so let's fix that ... here we are!

This time, we will host a series of shorter talks covering a wide range of topics: from generating static webpages with R, through Shiny app use-cases, to more technical deep-dives and package demos.

Confirmed speakers and topics:

  • Bence Arató (BI Consulting): R in 2025: tRends and diRections
Looking at the current state of R from an industry perspective.
  • Eszter Ari (ELTE): Is it worth creating and maintaining a scientific CV and/or a group website using Quarto?
I created a website for my CV and started a group website using Quarto. However, I am still hesitant about whether this is the best solution to minimize maintenance while creating an eye-catching website. I am satisfied with the CV, e.g. the Publication part is updated automatically from a Google sheet. However, creating a modern website is a greater challenge for me, even with the help of LLMs. I will show my related successes and struggles, and I am very curious about your opinions.
  • Balázs Farkas: Identifying traffic accident hotspots using DBSCAN and Shiny
I'm presenting a Shiny app that I built for my portfolio, using the DBSCAN algorithm to identify traffic accident hotspots in the UK.
  • Dénes Tóth (Kogentum): The Joy of Upgrading R and Package Dependencies (in Production)
Keeping the dependencies of any software which is in use in production is a daunting but important task which should be performed on a regular basis, in a consistent way. In reality, especially for legacy projects, it is the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" principle which rules. In the talk we share the recent experience of upgrading a complex (legacy) R project from R 4.3.2 to 4.5.1, including its 1.5+ years old package dependencies. In a nutshell, it was not that painful as one would think, and most of the credit goes to CRAN.
  • Gergely Daroczi: Putting the R in Health
I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes ~half a year ago, so I decided to track my energy and carb intake, daily exercises, and blood glucose levels with minimal manual work ... automated with R! Since then, I'm in remission (~normal glucose levels) thanks to a strict diet and some lifestyle change -- and potentially to my R wiring and markdown reports as well 😎 I will highlight the related infrastructure (apps, APIs, databases) and some example results.

Agenda:

  • 18:00 Doors open
  • 18:15 Talks @ N15 101 (1st floor)
  • 19:30 Networking (pizza, soft drinks, wine)
  • 20:30 End of meetup, optionally walking to a nearby pub

I'm looking forward to meeting you all in person soon! This event is co-organized with and kindly hosted by CEU ECBS. Food (pizza) and drinks will be served on-site after the talks, and we might also make table reservations in a nearby pub after the official event. Cover image credits: R User Community (LinkedIn).
