Virtual: Body Scan
Roughly 20 min long practice
The body scan uses somatic mindfulness, a body-centered approach which integrates mind and body to help reduce stress, lessen reactivity, and unpleasant emotions. It operates on the principle that emotional distress is stored physically in the nervous system and often doesn't respond to logic when triggered or agitated. Ex. emotions are not just "in the head"; they are strongly rooted in physiology.
Using awareness to register physical sensations and observe what is happening on the body level, can help release tension faster than just by cognitive means alone, and getting us unstuck from the "fight-or-flight" mode.
Body scan can be used as a non-judgmental investigation to gain insight into what is going on within ourselves.
MODIFICATION / ADDITION:
If sleepiness arises, breathing through one body part, exhale through another, keep switching parts (ex. left side of body vs. right side, just arms vs. just legs, just front vs. just back, etc.) Helps anchor attention internally and in the present.
