Introduction to Ballerina and Ballerina - OCI Module

Ballerina is a new open source programming language that is designed to bring code-first agility to the challenge of integrating across endpoints. Ballerina has first-class support for services, distributed transactions, circuit-breakers, stream processing, data-access, JSON, XML, gRPC, and many other integration challenges. It is a compiled, transactional, statically and strongly typed programming language with textual and graphical syntaxes. Ballerina understands the architecture around it - the compiler is environment aware with microservices directly deployable into infrastructures like Docker and Kubernetes.

The session will consist of a live demo and discuss real-world use cases together with some discussion of the motivation for creating a new programming language and the design inspirations. It will also focus on modules developed in Ballerina that demonstrate the capabilities of Oracle's OCI API to orchestrate cloud resources. Developers can write core logic code along with configuration code to take advantage of the cloud native language features to build micro-services that can scale and manage OCI resources dynamically. Attendees will see Oracle's OCI API in action while being introduced to the new programming language Ballerina.

Senior Director - Cloud Architecture of WSO2. Lakmal has a long history of working in open source, cloud, and DevOps technologies and has been Vice President of Apache Stratos PaaS Project. Lakmal is an architect for containerization and deployment orchestration of Ballerina, a cloud-native open source programming language. He also a key member of the Ballerina evangelism team. Lakmal has also presented at numerous events, including ApacheCon, CloudOpen, QCon, JaxLondon, Cloud Expo, Cloudstack Collaboration Conference, WSO2Con, KubeCon, ContainerCamp, DeveloperWeek, API Summit, and many tech meetups.
