Let's help children - Boys town - Ahnnam Dong

Details

AND WE'RE BACK!! It was a great time last month with lots of great activities brought by teachers! Thanks to everyone who joined last time! The hike with the older boys was canceled last month due to strong wind and a bit of rain, so we will try again this month. Please join us for our next visit, on Saturday, May 17th!

There are 500 Children at the Boys Town Orphanage! I think these kiddos really need our help. Can you imagine how difficult it must be to stand out and find some individual attention in a population that large?!

The nuns who run the orphanage have a vision for English learning to be done in a more intimate setting! Here is our rough schedule for the day:
PART 1
12:20-12:30pm -- We will meet at Toseong station upstairs exit 6. From there, we will walk to the bus stop around the corner next to Busan University Hospital and take bus 134 to the orphanage together. We leave 12:30 prompt!!
12:45-1pm -- Meet at 알로이시오 elementary school dormitory (the school and dormitory are both new buildings adjacent to each other). Separate into groups and debrief about main objective for the day.
1:00-2:20pm -- "Class" time! Your class will have somewhere between 6 and 13 boys. You will be given a simple objective for the day, but you will mostly have lots of extra time to do your own activities you brought as well (games, reading, crafts, anything! But please also include a bit of English teaching as well~^^)
2:20-2:40pm -- Share your snacks, wrap-up, clean up, leave the rooms.
2:30-2:45pm -- Volunteers will convene on the first floor.
PART 2
2:30-2:45 -- Volunteers and middle school/high school boys meet in front of the elementary school. There are usually about four or five boys who join us.
2:45pm -- At 2:45 prompt, we will start the hike! From the school, it's only a short ways to the peak, so we are looking to be back at the school by 4pm, and take the bus to get back to Jagalchi/Nampodong by 4:30.
*Optional after the hike at 4:30pm: any volunteer is welcome to hang out with us after the hike and have dinner in Nampo-dong with the middle school/high school boys. They usually get permission and we treat them out to dinner.

What you should bring:

  1. If everyone brings a family pack of something sweet, I'm sure it'd make their day even more special. You can give the snacks to them towards the end of class, or save it for the older kids when we hang out with them for the hike!
  2. Please also bring a game, ball, craft, activity, or something fun to do with your individual class, as well as have an idea of an easy English topic to teach to the kids (white boards and markers will be provided per request) :)
  3. Have your ARC card with you (the orphanage may or may not ask to photo copy it as a precaution) and please take extra care to dress conservatively and cover up, ladies and gents!
  4. If you will be joining us for the hike, you might want to bring a bottle of water for yourself.
  5. If you're joining us to hang out after the hike, you'll need some cash for dinner and a little extra to pitch in for the older kids' meals.

With your help we can make a lasting, positive impression on these young minds. Let's make English fun! That said, some of these kids have been through a lot, please RSVP with integrity. The more people they can relate to as a role-model and trust the better, right?
There are regular volunteer opportunities available. If you are interested please let us know. If you're running late or need help give Katherine a call at 010-9286-2342 and Young 010-6553-5371

Address/Directions: we will meet at Toseong Station (#109 on the Orange Line/Line 1). We will meet upstairs exit 6. Then we will go around the corner and take bus 134 from "아미동입구" to "동산교회" which is a few stops away. Please be on time, as the easiest way to find the orphanage is if we are all together!
*If you need to get there on your own, you can take the bus or a <4,000won taxi from the station, just tell the driver to take you to Aloisio Elementary School: "Aloisio chodeung hakkyo ga juseyo," or just show this to the taxi driver: "알로이시오 초등학교 가주세요." The taxi driver might not know the school, so have the address on hand just in case: "부산광역시 서구 암남동 2-18 (도로명: 천해로13번길 16-9)

SEE YOU THERE!!!!
