What we’re about
Welcome to the community!
We are manifesting our vision of Black women thriving in inclusive outdoor spaces. We believe that our Black bodies belong in every facet of society, including in nature and on local, regional, and national trail systems, parks, and forests. We hike for adventure, self-care, and our overall well-being. Hikes within the DC | MD | VA area range in level of difficulty and distance. All skill levels are welcome. Beyond hikes, our meet-ups also include skill-building workshops, camping, trail/park maintenance, book discussions centered on the restorative power of nature and diversity, equity, and inclusion in the outdoors, and more.
*Member request must include a clear photo of yourself (i.e. no graphic designs, cartoons, etc.).
Hike Safety and Environmental Ethics:
All of our guided hikes are scouted beforehand, unless otherwise noted. The organizer is a Leave No Trace Trainer (LNT) and certified in Wilderness First Aid. We practice LNT during our outdoor events.
FAQ's:
Is participation exclusive to Black women?
We value diversity, equity, and inclusion and welcome women from other underrepresented groups. Aligned with our purpose, please note that we will regard the needs, perceptions, and experiences of Black women and our historic and complex relationship with the outdoors.
Is participation limited to women only?
We may occasionally participate or partner with other outdoor groups on events where participants have a wide range of backgrounds.
I’m new to hiking, so can I participate?
Yes, we welcome all skill and interest levels and our sweepers don't leave anyone behind. In fact, we’ve had several women initiate their first hike with us. We also offer some opportunities to connect through other outdoor activities and off the trails.
Can I make a suggestion for hikes or other outings?
Yes, please do. Feel free to message the organizer with your ideas for the group.
Can I help organize hikes or other related events for the group?
Yes, you are welcome to message the organizer about your interest to volunteer as an Event Organizer.
Are dogs welcome?
In some cases, yes. As a courtesy to others, please request in advance participation of a friendly, leashed dog to avoid compromising the hike experience for others. Additionally, please be aware of the Leave No Trace practices for dogs and that some parks have restrictions.
