Artificial Intelligence seems to have burst upon the world quite suddenly, but it has been gradually developing since the early days of computer technology and has been changing many of the ways we do things and the decisions we make about the world. Lately though it has reached a ‘tipping point’ because of the leap into Generative Artificial Intelligence and Large Language Model systems leading to the proliferation of chat bots that answer our every question and create works of literary and visual art on our instructions. And of course, there are those very human-like AI Robots with beguiling facial expressions -that may be plotting our downfall!
But the world of science fiction aside, AI systems are now embedded in nearly every process of our human lives - including health care, education, finance, retail, customer service, entertainment – to name a few. As these systems become more autonomous, more controlling and shaping of our lives, and are making more and more complex decisions, it becomes necessary to address questions regarding ethical issues such as moral agency and responsibility, bias, stereotyping, access etc.
These concerns are examined by our speaker on the topic, Kerry Stubbs.

Kerry has extensive human resources, research, and teaching expertise in the areas of anti-discrimination, equal employment opportunity and social justice. She has been appointed to a number of government and not for profit Boards and has worked as an academic in several universities. She has undergraduate and postgraduate honours degrees in Government and Public Administration. She is particularly interested in using innovative thinking to better co-design services and systems for the people who use them, and in particular disadvantaged and minority communities. She has moved through a range of industries and roles, largely with organisations that are focussed on service to the community. She has also been appointed to the NSW Government Domestic and Family Violence and Sexual Assault Council and is a member of the Community Advisory Committee for the Australian Digital Health Authority. Currently, she is the Chair of Achieve Australia Ltd, the Deputy Chair of Healthy North Coast Ltd and she is a Member of the Board of Trustees of Western Sydney University and chairs the Finance and Investment Committee.
She has recently returned from a course on AI at Standford University in the US and will talk about what she learnt there, and about how AI might assist in health and social care in a world where we are getting older, more demanding and running out of workforce. She will challenge us to think broadly and deeply about AI and the questions it poses.
