Abstract of session - Tour through the Current and Future Trends in Computing – Cloud & Edge
The talk will take you through a tour of the current and future trends in computing — from the constant shifts and turns between centralized to distributed computing moving from main-frame to client-server to cloud computing to the edge computing. Edge computing pushes applications, data and computing away from centralized points to the logical extremes of a network. Today’s world is a centralized world where computing occurs on the cloud. Increasingly the edge is becoming more intelligent and sophisticated with the Internet Of Things (IoT) – for example self-driving cars are effectively data centers on wheels, drones are data centers on wings. IoT Sensors becoming ubiquitous, exponential growth in data, mature cloud solutions, advances in Machine Learning, are driving the evolution of intelligence across the entire computing stack. Real-time response needs of IoT devices can no longer be completely satisfied by the centralized cloud model as it exists today. Data collection is forcing computing back to the edge of the cloud as the sensing, inferring and acting on sensor inputs need to happen closer to where the data is being generated. These intelligent end point devices capture vast amounts of information that needs to be processed in real time. The talk will motivate the shift from the centralized cloud computing to a distributed edge computing. The talk will also illustrate how machine learning unlocks the power of the edge. • What to bring
