Are you looking to introduce your kids to programming or just want to start learning the basics with a hands-on experience?

Scratch is a programming language where you can make interactive games, videos, and stories. The visual nature of it leads to "building block" programming that is perfect for younger kids. You can use Scratch to make and share games with friends. (https://scratch.mit.edu/about/)

Mara Grigore is a Scratch programming expert. She introduced Scratch at the popular "Kids Can Code" night for Philly.NET in 2015. She'll explain the fundamentals of Scratch and how to get it set up on your computer. Later in the presentation, you will be able to follow along and make your first Scratch app.

This presentation and lab is perfect for younger kids from 6 and up. Younger kids may need a parent's help to use a computer.

Computers or laptops are NOT provided. You should bring a Windows based PC or Mac. The web version uses Flash, while the downloadable environment can be used offline. There is no requirement for you to join the online community or share your creations if you do not wish to. Scratch was designed to be family friendly and they've thought through many of the key questions a parent might ask (see: https://scratch.mit.edu/parents/)

Note to Parents

Philly GameWorks is a volunteer driven group and we are grateful to Microsoft for providing the space for us to meet. We are not sponsored and do not provide refreshments. Please feel free to bring something to enjoy during the evening. We are responsible for keeping the meeting room clean.

All kids under 18 must be accompanied by an adult who will be responsible for them the entire evening. There are bathrooms near the presentation room, but there are not vending machines available.
