Photograph the Milky Way at St Martha's Hill

Details

For this event we will meet at St Martha's Hill to photograph the Milky Way.

The Galactic Centre, (the brightest part of the Milky Way), will be visible 6.6 degrees above the horizon at around 10pm when astronmical twilight ends and the sky is pitch black. There is a new moon so there will be no light pollution from moonlight.

From the car park where we will meet there is a 10 minute uphill walk to the Church at the top of the hill where we will set up.

If you are not sure of your camera settings for this kind of event I am happy to help, and there are always people present who can offer advice as well.

Timings ...
Sunset : 19.53
Astronomical twilight 21.11 to 21.58
Galactic centre visible 21.58 to 23.24

EQUIPMENT ...

A torch will be useful ... please cover with a red gel a to protect your, (and everyone else's), night vision.

A tripod is essential.

A wide angle lens is best (in the region of 10-20mm) to allow you to capture a large area of the sky. Also a lens with a wide aperture, (f 2.8 would be ideal), to let in as much light as possible, but we will all work with whatever lenses we have.
