The Evolution of Cybersecurity: From Past to Present

From the TMRC to the CFAA, Dr. Nathan Fisk will trace the history of hacking and hacking culture as it has influenced policy, technology, and the public imagination. Through this history of hacking, Fisk explains that culture and community have emerged as key elements of cybersecurity practice, providing amateurs and professionals with a deeply critical understanding of complex sociotechical systems.

Nathan Fisk is an Assistant Professor of Cybersecurity Education at USF. He is among the inaugural group of five Fulbright Cybersecurity Scholars, having been invited to the London School of Economics in Fall 2016 to perform research on youth privacy online and cybersecurity workforce capacity building. Currently, he is exploring social scientific approaches to the production and dissemination of technical knowledge within informal cybersecurity community groups, as a means to develop innovative forms of cybersecurity education. Fisk’s third book, Framing Internet Safety, was published by MIT Press in December 2016. Fisk is currently serving on national working groups for both the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) and the Higher Education Information Security Council (HEISC).
