SUMMARY
Since its introduction by Sigmund Freud in the late 19th century, psychoanalysis has been a topic of controversy. But over one hundred years later, the field persists and psychoanalytical therapy continues to have strong advocates for its effectiveness. Could modern neuroscience help us to unpick a real scientific basis for the practice?
In this talk, neuropsychologist and psychoanalyst Mark Solms presents his views on the topic, based on his efforts to bring together psychoanalysis with modern empirical neuroscience, all while remaining true to Freud's original vision.
Through exploration of Freud's writings, and discovering where he was right and where he was wrong, could psychoanalysis be considered a leading treatment option once again? With our 21st century knowledge of the brain, what case can be made for psychoanalysis? And what impact could that have on our healthcare system?
Copies of Mark's book " The Only Cure: Freud and the Neuroscience of Mental Healing" will be available for purchase after the talk.
