Join us for a unique evening with world renown dance instructors Sonia and Cristian at Calgary Folk Dance Fridays! We will be dancing from 7 to 9:30 at Evergreen Community Spaces. This is a once in a lifetime experience to learn dancing from these two celebrated Romanian dance instructors.
Sonia Dion and Cristian Florescu form a dynamic duo renowned for their captivating performances in Romanian folk dance.
Here's a summary of their backgrounds and contributions to the world of dance:
Cristian Florescu:
- Cristian's journey in dance began in Bucharest, Romania, in 1982, where he started with various Romanian folk ensembles.
- He received formal training from esteemed specialists, including Theodor Vasilescu, and honed his skills as a principal dancer with the National Ensemble Cununa Carpatilor.
- In 1990-91, Cristian obtained recognition as a solo dancer and choreographer in the folklore domain from the Romanian Ministry of Culture and the ACAFR.
- He later expanded his expertise by joining Les SortilËges, a professional folk dance company based in Montreal, Canada, in 1993. During his tenure there, he not only performed but also taught and choreographed dances.
- His time in Canada broadened his repertoire to include various dance forms such as modern dance, ballroom, jazz, tap, French-Canadian, and Irish step dancing.
Sonia Dion:
- Sonia, born in Quebec, boasts over two decades of experience as a professional dancer.
- She played diverse roles, including lead dancer, choreographer, and artistic director, for Les Sortilèges dance company, one of Canada's oldest professional folk dance ensembles.
- Throughout her career, Sonia has toured extensively worldwide, gaining exposure to a rich array of dance techniques. These include Romanian folk dance, Scottish Highland dancing, French-Canadian step dance, and ballroom dance.
