[Intermediate] Honky-Tonk Roots: Learning Classic Country Guitar 5/6
Details
### Honky-Tonk Roots: Intermediate
You know your chords, you can keep up in a jam—but now you’re craving feel. This session dives into the expressive side of classic country guitar, where groove, taste, and emotion come before flash.
We’ll explore the subtleties that set the pros apart—dynamics, space, and knowing exactly when (and when not) to play.
You’ll:
Add tasteful fills with hammer-ons, pull-offs, and pentatonic runs
Practice shuffle rhythms and twangy textures
Learn to play behind the vocals and support the story
Explore “twin guitar” ideas (rhythm + lead working together)
Jam with songs that challenge feel, not just speed
Songs we’ll be working on:
Amarillo By Morning – George Strait
The Cowboy Rides Away – George Strait
Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way – Waylon Jennings
Silver Wings – Merle Haggard
Sing Me Back Home – Merle Haggard
Tulsa Time – Don Williams
Speed of the Sound of Loneliness – John Prine
This one’s about playing with heart, not showing off. You’ll leave with richer tone, better phrasing, and the tools to elevate any jam.
