Elderberry Canyon - Mount Tom

Details

*This is the makeup for the event scheduled for 3/30 that was cancelled*

For this event we will attempt to ride and ski Elderberry Canyon on Mount Tom. This classic climbs over 5,500' from the desert floor and demands endurance and conditioning. The rider is rewarded with an equally long descent (or however far the snow allows for). Hopefully the system moving through this weekend provides a nice refresh to the conditions.

The plan is to meet at the turnoff from Pine Creek Rd. to Vanadium Ranch Rd. in the town of Rovanna at 6am on April 6th. We will proceed up the road as far as we can go, check gear and get started from there. Prepare for an early start and a long day.

Please note that this event may be cancelled or rescheduled at any time due to changing weather or poor conditions.

AIARE Level 1 certification (or international equivalent) is required to participate.

Required equipment:

Safety Equipment:
Avalanche beacon (digital only), shovel and probe ...and the knowledge to use all of this equipment and proficiently conduct a transceiver search.
Personal first aid kit
Two-way radio (optional but recommended)

Touring Equipment:
Alpine touring/telemark skis or split board, poles, etc.
Climbing skins
Ski/board & boot crampons (optional, may be necessary on some routes)
Repair kit and spare parts
Ice axe (optional, may be necessary on some routes)
Winter clothing - shell, insulation, gloves
Sunglasses, sunscreen
Overnight camping gear (if applicable to the event)

We will check our beacons and gear together at the trailhead before every trip. Missing gear = no trip - so make sure to check your gear list before leaving home!

Travel in the backcountry and avalanche terrain is a high risk activity and participants assume all risk. Visit https://www.esavalanche.org to check current avalanche conditions.
