“Anthropocene” refers to a geological epoch starting around the 18th century, where the effect that people have on the Earth’s environment and climate started becoming more significant than natural effects. As an art researcher, Marina is exploring more caring ways of relating to the environment through artistic practice research.

In Marina’s words: “Art practices can, in their capacities to explore complex and ambiguous meaning, help making the relationship between human and non-human entities visible. Art’s ability to create spaces in which people are invited to stay in non clear-cut states and where further questions are provided rather than answers, motivates inquisitive attitudes which can set in motion deeper digging for meaning.”

In this talk, Marina will explore how art practices can bring about a form of cognising which can help us to look with discerning eyes into nature and to protect pluralistic considerations of knowledge, which render life in all its diversity possible. She will focus on her own practice and fieldwork in rural Spain as a lens through which to explore climate change and ecological crisis. She investigates this through methodological approaches such as democracy of experiences, non-extractive research, critical self-reflection and moment-to-moment enquiries and she looks into photography, video and interventions as a way of mapping out cartographies of experiences.

Marina Velez is a multidisciplinary artist and researcher based in Cambridge, UK.
