Feb HPC Meetup

Details
For the Feb meetup, we will have two talks followed by a chance to network with fellow HPC enthusiasts over drinks and nibbles.
Talk 1:
"What is wrong with OpenStack?" Dr Kenneth Tan, Sardina Systems
Talk 2:
"A report from the FOSDEM HPC developer track." Dr John Hearns, XMA/Viglen
Talk 1 Abstract:
OpenStack is fast becoming the de-facto solution for implementing the private cloud. But is there something wrong with OpenStack?
Some components of OpenStack seem to have not taken into account the fundamentals of computing, resulting in nonsensical solutions. Some implementations of OpenStack cloud have further complicated the matter by trying to fit operating models that are not compatible with cloud operations. If you are interested in knowing what are the warts of OpenStack and some OpenStack implementations, come and find out more!
Dr Kenneth Tan has been in the large scale systems sector for 18+ years. At Sardina Systems, Kenneth leads the product development team responsible for building OpenStack automation software, to optimize OpenStack cloud operations.
Talk 2 Abstract:
John Hearns will present a quick overview of the talks given at the HPC and software defined storage tracks at FOSDEM 2017.
John Hearns gained a PhD for work at the LEP accelerator at CERN, but caught the computer bug and did not spend the rest of his life underground.
The first area that John applied his skills to was PET imaging at St Thomas hospital, then he ran away to join the movie industry in Soho.
He joined life in the fast lane, managing the HPC facility for the McLaren F1 team, and was there when Lewis Hamilton won the world championship.
John has worked for cluster integrators at Clustervision and Streamline and is currently with XMA/Viglen
