Bury St Edmunds south circular walk (15 miles, 6-7 hours)
PLEASE NOTE - we are trialling a new approach to organising walks where existing members sign up separately via our members group. This public event is for newcomers only to sign up, however the total group size on the walk will be around 30 people.
Join the club: There is a recurring £1 monthly fee for those who wish to become members. This helps cover admin costs and fund trips for the club. After the walk, the walk organisers will share the details of the club bank account via WhatsApp for those interested. On receipt of payment, newcomers will be added to the club Whatsapp group by the club organiser.
Logistics: Meet at Cambridge Train Station at 8.30AM. We will be taking the train leaving at 8:46AM for Bury St Edmunds (We recommend to buy a return ticket Cambridge->Bury St Edmunds for this hike, £15.10 with the railcard). We will be arriving at Bury at 9.25AM where we will start the walk. We will start walking around 9.30, if you come by car please make sure you know of possible parking places.
Description: We’ll begin our walk in Bury, passing through the townn towards the Bury
St Edmunds Abbey and then further south, along a stream, to Nowton Park. We will then go west via villages of Nowton, High Green and Horringer towards Adkin’s and lady Katharina’s woods, with a potential small woodland loop there. Then we will walk along river Linnet to Ickworth (National Trust area) and then we will follow footpaths and the road back to Bury train station. There will some cafes en route and historical landmarks where we may spend some time! End time will depend on many factors but we aim to finish at the station by 6PM.
Social: We'll have a picnic midway through the walk, and depending on the finish time and interest we may get a pint, and maybe dinner, at a pub in Bury or Cambridge. There may also be some cafe stops en route depending on time.
Food: Make sure you take plenty of water with you, at least 1.5L recommended, snacks are a good idea too and some packed lunch. We may see local shops, pubs and cafes along this route but cannot guarantee it will be around lunchtime, or that there will be enough time for a big group to order food.
Bring: Food as described above, walking kit - hiking boots, waterproof jacket, some layers, umbrella (check the weather beforehand), waterproof trousers. In case it is going to be sunny bring sunscreen, a hat etc for protection.
Trips: Only come if you are inclined to join further upcoming trips and the hiking community. After the training walk, we will add you to the Whatsapp group where you can find out more.
Fitness: Ensure you can walk this distance, potentially through the mud and in the rain.
Terrain: Flat terrain, very slight ascent in places. Mostly local roads, pavements or gravel tracks.
