The Cambridge University Indian Classical Music Society (CU ICM) and the Centre for Music Performance are excited to present 'Dastaan: Tales from the Roots of Indian Classical Music' on Saturday, 28 February, from 7:00–9:30PM at Fitzwilliam College Auditorium. Supported by the Centre for Music Performance as part of its annual World Music Festival, this concert celebrates the relationship between South Asian folk traditions and classical music.
Dastaan—meaning "story" or "epic" in Urdu and Persian—weaves together the musical narratives that have shaped the subcontinent's classical traditions. The evening will feature performances spanning diverse regional styles including qawwali, Punjabi and Tamil folk, devotional bhajans, Nazrulgeeti, bhatiyali boat songs, and folk-inspired compositions from across India. Through these performances, we explore how folk music has influenced classical forms and how classical techniques have enriched regional traditions, creating a living dialogue across generations and geographies.
The concert will feature performances by members of the society who have been trained under esteemed musicians and range from new members of the university to alumni and Cambridge residents. Everyone is welcome, whether you're a world music aficionado or have never heard Indian Classical music!
