Cambridge University Indian Classical Music Society (CUICM) presents an afternoon of music, learning, and discovery with two exceptional artists.
J.A. Jayant: flute and Sri R.N. Prakash: mridangam - join us for a lecture demonstration followed by a live concert, offering audiences an immersive experience of South Indian Carnatic music from the inside out.
The session will open with a lecture demonstration in which J.A. Jayant and Sri R.N. Prakash introduce the world of Carnatic music through live performance, explanation, and interaction. This is a wonderful opportunity to understand how Indian classical music works; its ragas, rhythms, and improvisational language, in an accessible and engaging format. No prior musical experience or background in Indian classical music is required. This event is for everyone: music enthusiasts, students, performers of any tradition, and the simply curious.
The lecture demonstration will be followed by a full concert, giving audiences the chance to experience the full depth and beauty of Carnatic music in performance.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
J.A. Jayant is an internationally acclaimed Carnatic flautist, composer, and educator, as well as a Darbar Festival artist. Recognised as the torchbearer of the Flute Mali tradition, he trained under his grandfather, the late Flute T.S. Sankaran, a disciple of the legendary Flute Mali. A prodigious talent, Jayant performed complex Raagam Thanam Pallavi compositions at just seven years old and has since completed over 45 international tours across more than 25 countries, with close to 2000 solo and collaborative performances to his credit. He is the first Carnatic flautist to introduce the 106 cm Double Bass flute, and his accolades include the Best Instrumentalist Award from the Madras Music Academy (awarded seven times) and the Bharat Ratna Dr M.S. Subbulakshmi Fellowship Award.
Sri R.N. Prakash is a highly accomplished percussionist specialising in mridangam, ghatam, and khanjira. A Darbar Festival artist, he trained from the age of six in Bangalore under K.N. Krishna Murthy and has built an outstanding career performing in Carnatic classical and fusion ensembles across the UK and internationally. He holds a faculty position at the London School of Carnatic Music and is widely respected as both a performer and educator.
