Dr Jane Aspell’s talk will explore case studies of neurological patients who have had out of body experiences, which are profound, temporary changes to the sense of self, body and reality. More commonly associated with near-death experiences, OBEs can also be triggered by a range of different medical conditions and traumatic incidents. Written accounts of OBEs go back over 2,000 years, but until recently there has been no scientific explanation for why these phenomena occur.

Dr Aspell will present recent scientific studies that have investigated what happens in the brain during an out of body experience and in related conditions, such as when people see their own ‘body double’.

Dr Jane Aspell is Associate Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge.
