Join Janet for New Cambridge Singers performing works by Hubert Parry, Vaughan Williams, Gerald Finzi, Judith Weir and Gustav Holst, basically metaphysical poetry set to music.
John Donne, Richard Crashaw, George Herbert – between them they represented a strand of poetry that became known as metaphysical: a style at once profoundly spiritual, philosophical, and wryly humorous. Composers have flocked to set to music their poetry, inspiring some of their finest works: Vaughan Williams’s magisterial, moving Five mystical songs, Judith Weir’s haunting Vertue, and Gerald Finzi’s choral masterpiece Lo, the full, final sacrifice. This programme allows listeners to bask in the perfect union of words and music.
Venue: All Saints Church, Church Street, Great Chesterford, nr Saffron Walden CB10 1NP.
Tickets (available on the door) are £15 with refreshments included.
Meeting point: outside the church at 7pm
