Cambridge Metagenomics Challenge - Workshop (2)

Details

What's really in the River Cam? In the Cambridge Metagenomics Challenge, you can be part of an exciting citizen science project attempting to solve this question. In the process, you'll learn about cutting-edge DNA sequencing techniques and how we apply them to real-world environmental questions.

------------------

This is the second workshop in a series, available to participants who have attended the first workshop only: see https://www.meetup.com/Cambridge-Synthetic-Biology-Meetup/events/262556461/ for more details and how to apply.

------------------
Location: Biomakespace Cambridge, (https://goo.gl/maps/TCQsJqWcJaUe1gz56)

Agenda - Workshop 2 (10-4pm)
10-10:30am: Introduction to PCR and Sequencing.
10:30-4pm: Practical DNA amplification using PCR and loading the Oxford Nanopore minION sequencer using PuntSeq's established pipeline and protocol. This is a combination of observation in the lab, with participatory lab-work. Coffee, Tea & Biscuits are provided for breaks while longer protocol steps are running, with talks, boardgames and social time upstairs in the PostDoc centre.

Following this workshop, the PuntSeq team will perform bioinformatics analysis of the results and will present overall findings at a public gathering (on a mutually agreed date), to which all participants will receive priority invitations.

Requirements

  • You must be aged 18 or over, or be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
