2nd 2019 Cambridge UK Computational Biology and Bioinformatics meetup 17 May

Dear Members,

We would like to invite you to the second 2019 Computational Biology and Bioinformatics meet-up. N.B. To accommodate our growing community we will host the Meetup again at the “Harvard” room at Anglia Ruskin University.

We have again two exciting presentations lined up. Our first confirmed speaker will be Dr. Katharina Lauer (Industry Officer, ELIXIR).
Kathi is the Industry Officer for ELIXIR – an intergovernmental organisation, which coordinates digital infrastructures in bioinformatics and data driven life sciences across 21 member states and the EMBL-EBI uniting more than 220 research institutes. She leads the development and implementation of ELIXIR’s Industry Strategy, including the ELIXIR Innovation and SME programme. Kathi holds a PhD in Medicine from the University of Manchester (UK), during which she volunteered for Public Health England in the Ebola epidemic in Sierra Leone. She joined ELIXIR from the University of Cambridge where she worked as a researcher in the Department of Pathology. Kathi has a keen interest for exploring entrepreneurial ecosystems in the bio-data space, innovation-oriented infrastructure systems and public-private partnerships. She further applies her expertise in the above mentioned areas as Head of Training and Entrepreneurial Awareness for the Entrepreneurial Postdocs of Cambridge (EPOC).

Our second speaker will be Hari Prasad from Google Cloud who will be presenting on “Machine Learning and Biomedical Research on Google Cloud.” Hari works in Google as a customer engineer for Google cloud (GCP) working closely with Lifesciences and biotechs based out of the UK. Hari has a background working at various technology companies before moving to Cambridge to join MedImmune/AstraZeneca in 2010. He had the opportunity to work with various parts of the business including R&D, Commercial and Genomics. He moved to Google in 2018 to work as part of their Google Cloud team in government and Healthcare. Hari has been a presenter at conferences and worked and presented on Synthetic Genome data generation and simulation in the cloud.
