First 2020 UK Comp Bio meetup: "Impact of Quantum Computing" and "Drug Safety"

Details

Dear Members,

We will kick off the 2020 meetups in style in January. To help us going forward, we want to put together a full program for the coming year. If you are interested in giving a talk please get in touch with the organisers.

The first talk will be:
"Impacts of quantum computing on computational biology" by Crispin Keable.
Crispin is the Head of Big Data and HPC at Atos, having worked through the evolution of High Performance Computing over the past 25 years, from proprietary systems in hardware and software to open standards, open-source and commodity technologies. He works with a wide range of scientific and technology organizations to help define, translate and realize their technical and simulation goals.
Atos is a multinational information technology service and consulting company with over 110,000 employees in 73 countries and specializes in hi-tech transactional services, unified communications, cloud, big data and cybersecurity services.

Our second talk will be:
"Linking protein targets to side effects of drugs for better
drug safety profiling."

Ines Smit is a PhD student in the group of Dr. Andreas Bender at the
Department of Chemistry at the University of Cambridge. Her research
aims to identify proteins that are associated with side effects of
medicines, using informatics and statistical methods to integrate
various data sources and identify patterns. She will discuss her current
work which focuses on reports of potential side effects submitted by
patients and doctors (the Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event
Reporting System) and in vitro bioactivity data. Before starting her
PhD, Ines worked as a curator in the ChEMBL team at the European
Bioinformatics Institute. She holds a Master of Medical Science in
Toxicology from the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm.

As usual, we will have a selection of pizzas and beer available from 7pm with the talks starting at 8pm. We look forward to seeing you all again,

On behalf of the organisers,

David Lloyd
