Diotima’s Ladder of Love (Plato’s Symposium)

In this session, we’ll listen to a 30-minute passage from Plato’s Symposium in which Socrates recounts the teaching of Diotima — the Ladder of Love, the gradual ascent from physical attraction to the direct vision of Beauty itself.

After the reading, we’ll open a conversation on questions such as:

• What does it mean to “ascend” through love?
• How does beauty awaken the soul?
• What role does eros play in the philosophical life?

No prior knowledge is required — just curiosity, goodwill, and a willingness to dialogue together.
