On the Essence of the Soul (Plotinus, Ennead IV. 1-2)
Details
In this session, we’ll listen to Plotinus’ tractates On the Essence of the Soul (Ennead IV.1–2), where he examines what the soul is in itself — prior to its activities, prior even to its embodiment.
Plotinus argues that the soul is neither body nor a harmony of bodily elements, but a distinct, intelligible principle that gives life, unity, and order to the living world. These tractates lay the groundwork for understanding the soul’s immortality, its descent, and its relation to Intellect.
Key themes include:
- Why the soul is not reducible to body or material mixture
- The soul as a self-moving principle
- The soul’s place in the hierarchy of Being
- How one soul can be present in many bodies without division

After listening, we’ll open a discussion around questions such as:
- What does Plotinus mean by the “essence” of the soul?
- How does the soul give unity to what it animates?
- In what sense is the soul both present here and rooted above?
- How does this reshape our understanding of selfhood?
Beginners are very welcome, but this is advanced material.
You’ll get much more out of the discussion if you check out this Introduction to Neoplatonism beforehand.
