In this session, we’ll listen to Plotinus’ tractate On the Intellectual-Principle, the Ideas, and the Authentic-Existent (Ennead V.9). Here Plotinus explores the nature of Intellect (Nous) and the realm of Forms, arguing that the true realities — the Ideas themselves — exist within the Intellectual-Principle.
Developing Plato’s theory of Forms, Plotinus presents Intellect as a living unity in which thinking and being coincide, and where the archetypes of all things exist together in a higher, intelligible world.

Key themes include:

  • What Plotinus means by the Intellectual-Principle (Nous)
  • Why the Ideas must exist within Intellect itself
  • The relation between thinking, being, and truth
  • The distinction between the intelligible world and the world of sense

After listening, we’ll open a shared discussion around questions such as:

  • What is the Intellectual-Principle, and how does it differ from the soul?
  • Why must the Forms exist within Intellect rather than outside it?
  • What does it mean for thought and reality to be identical?
  • How does this reshape Plato’s theory of Forms?

Beginners are very welcome, but this is advanced material.

You’ll get much more out of the discussion if you check out this Introduction to Neoplatonism beforehand.
