What we’re about
Welcome to CCR Meetup!
We are happy you have joined our MeetUp Group to enjoy the many activities and educational opportunities we offer. CCR Meetup is sponsored by the Camera Club of Richmond (Virginia).
The Camera Club of Richmond was founded in 1932 to promote the art of photography in central Virginia. Our vision is to promote excellence in photography; inspiring our members to reveal the world around us, preserve memories and create works of art. The Camera Club of Richmond’s mission is to empower our members to learn and grow their photographic craft through education, activities, exhibits, critiques, mentoring, and competitions.
Our membership has a wide range of experience and skill levels in film, digital, mirrorless, and cell phone cameras. In addition, members have the opportunity to display their work in various galleries throughout the Richmond area, have their work evaluated several times a year at our scheduled Evaluation Meetings, and participate in an End of Year Competition and Awards Presentation.
CCR welcomes photographers of all experience levels to share their passion for photography. Please be our guest at one of our monthly meetings:

Bob Brown studied Commercial Art at RPI (now VCU) until he realized that he could shoot better pictures than he could draw after having a course in photography. Switched majors to Photography, studied film as well as still photography, finishing in 1958. Worked with motion pictures at WRVA-TV (now WWBT), leaving in 1968 to begin a career at Richmond Times-Dispatch & Richmond News Leader. Has won first place awards in state, regional, and national competitions. Three times Virginia News Photographer of the Year. Covered the Virginia General Assembly for 52 years. First photojournalist inducted into the Virginia Communications Hall of Fame. Most fun was the 20+ years he and Bill Lohmann traveled the state looking for stories, gravy, and pie. Retired at age 84 in 2022. Still usually has a camera nearby... just in case the BEST SHOT EVER shows up in front of him.Bill Lohmann was a longtime columnist and feature writer for the Richmond Times-Dispatch before he retired in 2023. Born and raised in Richmond, he worked more than 40 years in the news business. He began his career as a sportswriter for the Charlottesville Daily Progress before moving to United Press International, where he worked in bureaus in Richmond, Orlando and Atlanta. He returned to Richmond in 1988 to write for The News Leader, joining The Times-Dispatch when the papers merged in 1992.
He’s the author of several books, including two Back Roads books that were collaborations with his good friend and colleague, Bob Brown. Other books include Backroads and Byways of Virginia, a travel guide now in its third edition, and DR COPTR: The Flying Physician Who Kept His Promise to Tangier Island, the story of Dr. David Nichols and his remarkable devotion to the residents of Tangier Island. Bill’s first book was Are We There Yet? a compilation of columns about his family’s cross-country adventure in the summer of 2000.
In 2019, Bill was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Virginia chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
