Owls, Eagles & Rare Birding Gems: A Winter Birding Adventure
Details
Hello Bird Lovers,
It’s been an exciting few weeks in the birding world, with a flurry of rare species showing up across Southern Ontario. Much of this action has been concentrated along the Lake Ontario shoreline, and that’s exactly where we’re heading. For this outing, we’ll focus on the west end of the Lake Ontario from Burlington to Grimsby, an area that consistently produces surprises.
As always, we’ll be tuned in to the latest sightings. If a rarity pops up, we’ll be ready to adjust our route so we can try for it. Whether we’re chasing something extraordinary or simply enjoying the regular cast of birds, the day will be full of discovery, great company, and beautiful lakefront scenery.
Our first mission will be in Peel Region, where a Townsend’s Warbler, a rare guest from the west coast that has been around for the last week. If it's still around, we’ll go see if we can spot this rare little gem.
From there, we’ll head to LaSalle Park in Burlington for Trumpeter Swans, a variety of waterfowl, and a solid chance at seeing Bald Eagles. We’ll also visit one of my favourite quiet spots to look for Long-eared Owls.
The adventure continues with a stop beneath the Burlington Skyway, a fantastic location for Peregrine Falcons and large rafts of waterfowl, often a goldmine for photographers. We’ll also try another secret location where tiny Northern Saw-whet Owl's roost, and we’ll keep an eye out for Snowy Owls that occasionally linger along the lakeshore.
This outing is designed for everyone, seasoned birders, photographers looking for high-quality shots, and anyone who simply loves being out in nature. With flexibility, sharp local knowledge, and an eye on real time reports, we’ll put ourselves in the best possible position to see amazing birds and craft a memorable day together.
And as always, the group energy makes these outings special. Expect smiles, laughs, and a relaxed, fun day exploring the hidden birding treasures of western Lake Ontario.
