Apache Cassandra & Apache Kafka: The How | The When | The Why

Details
Always wanted to know why some of the top tech companies like Spotify, Netflix, or even Instaclustr are using Apache Cassandra and Apache Kafka to build applications with high performance, scalability and availability.
Then come along to this Meetup hosted by Canberra Big Data Group. Join us for back-to-back talks covering two of the most exciting open source, distributed, reliable, scalable and highly available technologies: Apache Cassandra and Apache Kafka.
- Apache Cassandra:
Apache Cassandra is the distributed database system developed and open sourced by Facebook. You will learn how Cassandra is capable of scaling to hundreds of nodes to ingest, store, and serve more data with low latency, while remaining online at any time. We will cover key concepts of Cassandra and explore typical use cases for this open source technology.
This talk will be presented by Evelyn Bayes. Evelyn is a Operations Engineer at Instaclustr. She's a member of the team responsible for the continual operation of the Instaclustr fleet consisting of 347 clusters with 2160 instances running a combination of Apache Cassandra, Spark, Kafka, Zeppelin and Elastic Search. Evelyn's background is in data engineering specializing in distributed systems, systems tuning, data analytics and machine learning.
- Apache Kafka:
Apache Kafka is the popular message broker system developed and open sourced by Linkedin. You will learn how Kafka manages to ingest events from multiple data sources, transform them as needed, and make them available for any consumer application. We will discuss the core concepts of producers / consumers, and explain how scalability and high availability can be achieved and explore several use cases where this technology has been successful.
This talk will be presented by Paul Brebner. Paul is the Technology Evangelist at Instaclustr. He’s been learning new scalable big data technologies, solving realistic problems and building applications, and blogging about Apache Cassandra, Spark, Zeppelin, and Kafka. Paul has extensive R&D and industry experience in distributed systems, technology innovation, software architecture and engineering, software performance and scalability, grid and cloud computing, and data analytics and machine learning (UNSW, CSIRO, UCL/UK, NICTA, and founder/CTO of a NICTA tech startup).
Pizza beers and soft drinks will be provided. We look forward to seeing you at the Canberra Innovation Network!
