What we’re about
Do you love walking, dogs and exploring new places? Canberra Dog Walks offers guided social walks for dogs and their humans showcasing the best of Canberra. We are a friendly and welcoming group that's been running since 2016. Generally our walks:
- last between 1 and 2 hours (3-6 km)
- provide one or more optional off leash opportunities
- start and end at a dog friendly café
- follow a loop with minimal retracing of steps
- feature interesting stuff for humans too, such as beautiful views, quirky sculptures or historic buildings.
We offer more than 30 different dog friendly walking routes all over Canberra, and even a few in Queanbeyan and Bungendore, so it's a great way to explore new neighbourhoods.
All walkers are welcome, with or without dogs. We walk at a relaxed pace for maximum enjoyment. Many of our walks include shorter options for those not wanting to walk the whole route.
Please go to our FAQ page for more detailed information on our walks or message the organiser directly.
Membership of this group is $7.50 per year, due within 30 days of joining, but your first walk is free. Payment of the membership fee can be made directly through Meetup (however the charge will be in US dollars), or by attending a walk within 30 days of joining and paying the walk guide directly (when the charge will be in Australia dollars).
We also ask $7.50 from each adult participating in a walk (except for their first walk as per above). Payment is made directly to the guide, who uses a card reader, when you turn up for the walk. No cash is accepted.
These payments help cover our Meetup subscription, insurance, travel, IT and other costs. The group is run on a not-for-profit basis with any excess funds donated to RSPCA Canberra and the ACT Pet Crisis Fund.
To find out more detail about our fees, please go to our FAQ page or message the organiser directly.

Important
- All walkers participate entirely at their own risk and are wholly responsible for their own and their dog's behaviour. By rsvping to a scheduled walk, you understand and agree to this condition.
- We ask that all participants follow the walk guide's directions, especially in relation to their dogs. For example, individual participants may be asked to walk their dog/s on-leash for part or all of the walk if, in the guide's judgement, it is necessary for the consideration of others in the group, or other members of the public. The guide is using their best judgement, after leading hundreds of walks with many different dogs, to ensure as far as possible that everyone has a pleasant experience.
Upcoming events (4+)
See all- Wednesday Kaleen-Giralang walk - doggie off leash heavenBrew N Bite, KaleenA$7.50
This super dog friendly walk includes oodles of extended and safe off leash opportunities. The route is only about 5km, but we do have some uphill walking during the first third of the walk!
Once we cross the road at the shops, this walk boasts extensive off-leash periods for our furry friends. We'll take the hill towards the Barton Hwy slowly, so we don't lose anyone, and there is a road to cross half way up, as a good place to pause for any puffers.
We then walk parallel to (but away from) the Barton Highway through a wide park, which includes a small incline again, with a good sized mud puddle for those dogs that love the stuff.
Then it's a short section through Giralang neighbourhoods, with the humans back on leash please, before we meander across the off leash Giralang playing fields and back to Kaleen Plaza via the path or large storm drains.
This walk is mostly on dirt tracks, with some paved paths and walking over grass.
You can find out more and see a google map of the route on our website.
Afterwards there's the option of coffee/brunch at Brew N Bite café which is very dog friendly.
There is plenty of parking off Georgina Crescent at both ends of the Kaleen Plaza, and public toilets just inside the Plaza entrance next to Brew N Bite cafe.
Important info:
- You walk entirely at your own risk and you are wholly responsible for your own, and your dog's, behaviour; by rsvping 'yes' to this walk you understand and agree to this condition.
- All off-leash activities are at the discretion of the walk guide. If for any reason they feel any dog should be back on lead, please respect their decision, as they are trying to ensure everyone has a pleasant experience.
- We ask $7.50 per adult to be paid by card to the guide at the beginning of the walk - children (under 18) walk free of charge. The charge helps cover our meetup subscription, insurance, internet, petrol, and other costs. We will gladly refund this if you are not happy for any reason.

- Short Sunday stroll in Palmerville Park, Evatt - doggie off-leash nirvanaPalmerville Heritage Park, BelconnenA$7.50
An ultra pretty pocket of off-leash nirvana! This is what our dogs would say if they could talk. For our dogs, the walk is entirely off leash (dependent on doggie interactions of course).
For the humans, there are thick stands of attractive shady trees, information boards about early settler history, and the security of knowing the area is bordered by high net fencing on one side and the creek and high banks on the other.
Located in Palmerville Heritage Park adjacent to Evatt, the walk follows a gentle, ambling 3 km route which will take approximately one hour to complete. We'll be walking on dirt tracks, across grass and on some gravel paths.
There is free parking in the small car park in the middle of the Palmerville access road, off Owen Dixon Drive. There are also bins, poo bag dispensers and drinking water.
There's also the option of coffee/brunch at a little cafe at the nearby Kaleen shops.

- Wednesday Ainslie walk - heritage cottages and city viewsMeet @ Ainslie Shops, AinslieA$7.50
Come explore one of Canberra's oldest suburb, Ainslie, taking a meandering route through quiet, pretty streets and parks.
Ainslie features heritage listed cottages dating from the 1920s, intermixed with very modern houses, and street tree plantings from the 1940s. We'll pass through a variety of modest, informal parks, as well as a brief stretch through the Mount Ainslie nature park.
This is a mainly on-leash walk, but there is a large off leash oval at the end of the walk for our dogs to have some free play time.
The walk starts and ends at the Ainslie shops featuring a dog friendly café/pub, the Edgar Inn.
This is an easy walk of around 4 km, with only one uphill section at the beginning of the walk. It should take around 90 minutes to complete with a group. The route includes a mixture of paved paths, dirt tracks and cross country walking across grass.
There's parking on Edgar Street and more behind the Ainslie shops.
You can find more information about this walk and a google map of the route on our website.
