Following his recent transition from the Australian Bureau of Statistics to the Department of Finance, John now leads the charge on Australia’s Digital ID initiative, which can be explored at https://www.digitalidentity.gov.au/.

The Digital ID taskforce will become increasingly high profile as the Hon. Katy Gallagher has flagged that the Government’s intention is for Australia’s national digital identity legislation to be passed by mid-2024.

With a successful track record in leading large-scale digital transformations influencing both the public and private sectors, John Shepherd is ideally positioned for this pivotal role in leading the strategy for Australia’s National Digital ID program. His commitment to inclusivity, alongside his profound understanding of the regulatory requirements needed to back pragmatic legislation, will be called upon during his stewardship of the Trusted Digital Identity Framework (TDIF).

The success of the TDIF is crucial to enabling the future of our Government’s online services and fortifying Australia’s online economy at large. Given John's vast experience and current role, he brings a rare depth of vision and insight to our gathering.
