About us

🌿Welcome to The Cape Town Hobbies Social Club!

Are you looking for a low-pressure space to disconnect from your daily work routine, make progress on a personal project, and meet genuine people?
We are a community built around "parallel play" connection—bringing our own independent, portable projects to work on side-by-side in beautiful public spaces, followed by an intentional hour of relaxed, structured socialising.

✨ What counts as a "Hobby" here?
You do not need to be an artist or a professional designer to be here! This is explicitly a sanctuary for anyone who wants to carve out time to produce anything clean, portable, and personal. If it fits on a picnic blanket or a small cafe table and doesn't leave a mess, it belongs here.

✨ Attendees can bring things like:

  • Writing & Mind: Creative writing, journaling, blogging, or personal goal planning.
  • Casual Crafts: Adult colouring-in books, sketching, knitting, embroidery, or mending a favourite piece of clothing.
  • Digital & Tech: Writing code for a side hustle, organising a personal project on a laptop, or digital illustration on an iPad.

It is the perfect space for people who feel they have zero creativity or personal focus time in their day jobs to get back in touch with their hands-on side. (Note: To ensure we stay focused on active production and personal projects, this is a space for hands-on activities).

✨ How It Works:
We gather at beautiful spots across Cape Town and run a relaxed, high-connection format:

  • Arrive & Align (15 mins): Find the group and have a quick meet and greet.
  • The Focus Block (1 hour 15 mins): Unpack your gear, and get comfortable. Deep quiet time. Headphones on or ambient park sounds only. This gives you plenty of time to set up your laptop, iPad, or craft and sink into a peaceful flow state.
  • The Connection Hour (1 hour): Tools down, laptops closed! We transition into an intentional hour of connection. In small, relaxed groups, we share what we’ve been busy with. It’s a beautifully organic conversation starter—making it easy to ask questions like, "Why are you passionate about this project?" and form real bonds.
  • Choose Your Own Adventure: You are completely free to head home, or stay on the lawns and keep chatting and creating until you are ready to leave.

No pressure. No messy studios. Just personal projects and genuine human connection. Bring your project, and let’s connect!

🎒 What to Bring:

  • Your Hobby: Any portable, low-mess hobby that fits on your lap or a picnic blanket. Think sketchbooks, knitting, crosswords, digital art, journalling, embroidery, or puzzle books.
  • Your Setup: A picnic blanket, towel, or a lightweight camping chair, plus a jacket/sunscreen.
  • Refreshments (Optional): Bring snacks and a drink to keep you hydrated.
  • Pro-Tip: Bring a couple of binder clips or weights to keep any pages or lightweight materials from catching the wind!
