Vector-borne diseases! Focusing on Zika

Join us at the Ripe Tomato, in Ballston Spa, as we gather to have some great food (at your own expense), great conversation, and hear an engaging presentation about vector borne diseases, factors encourage spreading, and current Zika research from Dr. Laura Kramer, the Director at Wadsworth's Arbovirus Laboratory, and Univ. of Albany Professor. This event is FREE (except for any food or drink that you purchase.) Join us for a casual conversation and presentation and earn professional development time (2 hours) at the same time!

Details about the talk:

· What factors are leading to the global emergence of vector-borne diseases? Are specific geographic areas more at risk?

· How did Zika virus spread? Is the pattern of emergence of Zika virus unique?

· What are the complications of Zika virus infection? Is Zika causing microcephaly in babies? Guillain Barre in adults? Other secondary conditions?

· What can and is being done to control further spread of Zika at this time?

A bit more about Dr. Kramer: Dr. Laura Kramer earned her PhD at Cornell Medical College, NY, in 1974, after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania in 1967. She was a post-doctoral fellow at Gorgas Lab, Panama, and University of California, Berkeley. Currently Dr. Kramer is Director of the Arbovirus Laboratories, Wadsworth Center, New York State Department of Health; Professor of Biomedical Sciences, School of Public Health, State University of New York (SUNY) at Albany; Professor in the Masters in Laboratory Science program, Wadsworth Center; and Adjunct Professor in the Biology Department, Ecology & Evolution of Infectious Diseases, SUNY Albany. Dr. Kramer has more than 45 years’ experience studying arboviruses in the field and laboratory, using both experimental and observational approaches, and classical and molecular tools. Her lab’s research focuses on how the interactions between arthropod vectors, viruses, and vertebrate hosts are affected by biotic and abiotic factors; and how these interactions impact the intensity of viral transmission, and subsequently viral evolution and adaptation. Her work has resulted in more than 180 publications, 27 book chapters, and more than 100 invited presentations in national and international settings. Dr. Kramer is also a Virology moderator for ProMED mail, an emerging diseases early warning alert, covering Ebola and other viruses.
