### Meeting Topic: What It Means to Take a Principled Stance

When faced with an injustice, most people judge it by how they feel about the outcome. If they like the result, they excuse it. If they dislike it, they oppose it. But this standard, preference over principle, erodes freedom at its very foundation.

A principled stance means asking a different question: does this action respect individual rights, or does it violate them? That principle is what protects every person’s ability to live their own life, to carry out their livelihood, and to be left free from coercion.

• Property Rights: You may love pets, but does that justify forcing landlords to accept them?
• Free Speech: You may despise certain opinions, but does that justify silencing them with violence?
• Religious Freedom: You may favour one faith, but does that justify giving government power to enforce it?
• Socialism: You may feel compassion for the poor, but does that justify taking from those who earned their living to give to those who did not?

These are not questions of taste or tribal loyalty, they are questions of principle. To stand on principle is to rise above emotion, above cultural narratives, above personal loyalties, and to defend the one thing that makes freedom possible: individual rights.

This month we will discuss what it truly means to take a principled stance, why it is the most difficult but most honest thing a person can do, and why it is essential for anyone who values liberty.
