In his talk, "The AI Journey from 1950s to GPT and Beyond," David Gunning leverages his decades of experience to guide audiences through the evolution of Artificial Intelligence. He traces AI's roots from its inception in the 1950s, where it aimed to mimic high-level human thought in logic, to the transformative development of technologies such as deep learning in the second wave of AI. The talk concludes with an exploration of contemporary AI advancements, including Large Language Models like GPT, while also discussing the ongoing challenges in achieving human-level AI. Gunning's presentation provides a comprehensive, insider's view of AI's trajectory, its potential, and the hurdles it faces.
David Gunning has extensive experience as a three-term DARPA program manager, where he managed a series of AI programs over three decades. These included the Explainable AI (XAI) program that he created and managed from its inception in 2016 and the Personalized Assistant that Learns (PAL) program from 2003-2008 that produced Siri. In between DARPA tours, Dave also managed AI research as technical manager at Facebook AI Research (FAIR), the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), Vulcan Inc., Cycorp, and the Air Force Research Labs.
