MAY FULL MOON HIKE ON JOANNA MOUNTAIN DUPONT STATE FOREST

Details

Three Lakes Trail and Joanna Mountain- Approximately 5.5 miles and under 500 ft elevation gain

Please join me on this full flower moon hike. Arrive about 6:30 pm in the Visitor Center parking lot near the rest rooms so we're ready to begin our hike at 6:45. No dogs on this hike please for the safety of everyone hiking on narrow trails and in the dark.

Moonrise is 7:49 p.m. and sunset is at 8:25 p.m. We will walk at a leisurely 2.0 mph pace from the Visitor Center parking lot on Buck Forest Road - in daylight - across the covered bridge and turn right on the Conservation Trail. This is a great time to watch for spring ephemerals. We will then turn left onto Three Lakes Trail near Reasonover Creek. We will hike that trail to Joanna Road where we'll turn right and follow the road to the top of the mountain where there is a 360 degree view. The moon will be rising. You might want to bring a towel or camp chair. There are rocks to sit on, too. We'll stay for about thirty minutes enjoying nature, socializing, and watching the sun set. Bring a treat and beverage if you wish.

We'll walk back in the dark (we might see some early fireflies) on the wide, level roads that are well maintained so walking in the dark will be safe. I would prefer that we not use headlamps or flashlights as it makes for a much more interesting evening - which is the point of this event. There will be some light even if the sky is not clear. Our eyes will adjust to the low light. If you will be uncomfortable walking in the dark without using a flashlight, maybe this hike is not for you.

Be prepared with a headlamp or small flashlight to keep handy just in case, but do not plan to use it.

The pin on the google map is accurate so you should use it. Please give yourself plenty of driving time in case of traffic as we leave promptly at 6:45 pm. Cell service is spotty at best in the mountains so we might not be able to communicate.

This hike will be cancelled by noon the day of the hike for inclement weather. WE DO NOT CANCEL IF IT'S CLOUDY.
