Indian Grave Gap to Beauty Spot (and maybe Unaka Mountain) TN
Details
This is a very scenic, moderate AT out-and-back section hike in nearby Cherokee NF in Tenn. There may likely be at least some remaining downed trees to navigate, and we'll extend the route beyond Beauty Spot to Unaka Mountain, with group consensus. For those wanting to carpool, we'll meet at the Weaverville Ingles plaza adjacent to Ace and the gas pumps NLT 8:45, with a hard departure at 9 sharp to meet the rest of the group and hit the trailhead at 10.
Total mileage approx. 6.6 miles with a total net elevation gain of approx. 1700 ft, depending on fire road access and trailhead parking. ETA back to cars between 2-3, with optional post-hike refreshments at nearby Mars Hill Brewing. Contingency rain date the following week TBA.
Beauty spot is a grassy bald on the TN/NC border where the AT passes over Unaka Mountain. Best known for its sunsets and panoramic views, it's one of the most easily accessible lookouts in Northeast TN and one of three main lookouts. The second also offers commanding panoramic views and is oriented more toward the south. Farther north is another wonderful lookout known as Horseback Ridge and Deep Gap Bald as you follow the AT blazes on the fence posts.
Directions: From I-26 take the Erwin Main Street Exit (#36), at the end of the ramp turn east toward town and you will immediately arrive at a stop light. Turn right onto Rt. 107 and drive 1/2 mile, turn left at stop light onto Rock Creek Road (Rt. 395) -- continue on for 6.6 miles to TN/NC line and AT crossing at Indian Grave Gap.
