Hike Soco Gap to Waterrock Knob for beautiful long range fall color

Beginning at the Soco Gap Overlook we will hike the Mountains to Sea Trail to the 6000 foot peak of Waterrock Knob. Distance: 9 miles. Ascent: 1950 feet, with almost all of that in the first half of the hike. There are roots, rocks and boulders to deal with, so be prepared and know that you are ready for this hike. With luck we will have great views at Piet's Place just before the connector to Waterrock, at the first overlook on the connector, and at the top of Waterrock itself. We will lunch at the top and then make out way back down.
The only meeting place is the Maggie Valley Post Office at 8:30 where we will form carpools and travel to the trailhead.
You do not need to be a member of the Carolina Mountain Club to join the hike, but you should consider joining if you are not a member. It's not expensive and the club does great things, leading over 200 hikes per year in addition to the meetups, and maintaining over 440 miles of trails in Western North Carolina, including 94 miles of the Appalachian Trail and 150 miles of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail.
