This is a great winter hike, just long enough to match our shorter days, and the views of the river from the trail are less obstructed with the leaves down. Most of the first half of the hike is a moderate climb that follows the Little East Fork of the Pigeon River, sometimes swinging wide from the stream but often closer, and much higher. The views of the rushing river with its many boulders and lovely cascades are fantastic. After leaving the Boy Scout Camp, at the two mile mark we pass the small Little East Fork Falls. At three miles we reach the point where the trail crosses the stream, heading toward Shining Rock. This will be our lunch and turnaround point. The trail is in excellent shape, although wet in a few spots.
We will meet at Jukebox Junction Diner, 6306 Pigeon Rd, Canton, NC 28716 at 9:30, form carpools to limit the number cars at the trailhead and travel through Daniel Boone Boy Scout Cap to the trailhead. Note that this hike is in the Shining Rock Wilderness which limits hiking groups to 10.
If you sign up and then change your mind, please cancel so that we don't wait for you. The 2pm end time is only a rough estimate.
You do not have to be a member of the Carolina Mountain Club to hike with me, but if you are not a member you should consider joining. We are an all-volunteer group that leads over 200 hikes per year (in addition to Meetups) and maintains more than 400 miles of trails in Western North Carolina. Join CMC
