This educational/enrichment program will be focused on Primitive Living Skills and Homesteading. Top quality instructors will teach dozens of ancestral and heritage primitive skills such as matchless fire making, edible and medicinal plants, stone tool creation and use, ancient weaponry and basket making, just to name a few. Earthskills gatherings are events where new friendships are forged, old friendships refined, and the empowering knowledge of pioneer, survival, native and traditional primitive skills are shared. These programs give participants the opportunity to become proficient in skills that have helped them redefine life goals and directions as well as broaden their knowledge of sustainable life ways, connection to nature, and the power of community. After a full day of hands-on instruction, evening programs give us the opportunity to join in the revival of the great oral tradition of storytelling around the council fire, or the option to pull up a chair at any one of the camps where homegrown and traditional Appalachian music is played, or the opportunity to answer the call of the drum and dance around the fire under a star-filled sky. One day to full event tickets with on-site camping are available. This event is family friendly and kids under 8 are free.
Instructor: Kevin McGee Location: Raleigh, NC. Directions will be emailed to attendees. The foundation of bushcraft is survival -- before we can thrive we must first survive, and survival means having the skills and knowledge to meet our basic human needs in any conditions. In this course we will cover the essential elements needed to do this using the bushcraft approach of working along with nature rather than against it. Kit building: The items that should be in your bushcraft survival kit and how to use them. Water: Building a water filter from scrounged materials. Chemical disinfection. Natural sources of safe water. Fire: How to find the best natural tinder, kindling and fuel. Effective fire starting and building. Different fire lays for different purposes. Shelter: Building primitive, modern, and hybrid shelters for different conditions. Cordage, knots and lashing: How to make strong cord from plants and trees. The three basic knots. Easy lashing to make tripods and shelters. Cutting tools: Using a knife and saw to help make what you need. We will also touch on natural navigation and edible plants. These are a lot of subjects to fit into 2 days but we will focus upon the most important information and skills for each one. This course will help give you the ability to stay warm and hydrated in a variety of different conditions and situations using only a minimal kit. What to bring: Lunch, water, a sharp knife (non-serrated 3.5-5" blade). There will be a few knives to borrow or to buy. Cost: I believe everyone who spends time in the wilderness should learn these skills. Not only are they fun to learn but they could potentially save your life. With this in mind I keep the cost low, this is about half of what similar courses cost. $130 Adult, $60 ages 8-16 with Adult. Limited to 10 attendees. RSVP does not reserve your spot. Pay through Meetup, paypal to [masked], or leave your email in a comment or PM. There is no function in Meetup for different adult/child pricing so only pay for the adults there.
