Clinic: Intro to Backcountry Camping (Backpacking Focus, Non-winter)

Details

This is a FREE introduction to backcountry camping, focused primarily on 3-season backpacking (but much of the info is applicable to canoe-tripping as well). It will not cover winter camping. It's open to people of all experience levels, but is aimed mostly at beginners or less-experienced folks.

The event will only go forward if at least 5 people commit to attending! To maximize the odds of that happening, I'm going to post this event in my other Meetup group too and perhaps mention it to a few others. I'll send out a cancellation or confirmation notice at least 24 hours before the scheduled start time so you'll have plenty of time to adjust your plans.

Some of the topics that could be covered (depending on attendee interest): clothing and footwear; backpacks; campsite selection; shelter and sleep systems; water purification; nutrition and cooking; hygiene (including "doing your business in the woods"); protecting your food supply; general backcountry safety; gear selection and packing. If possible, we'll cover fire building and fire safety as well.

I'll bring along a lot of my own gear so you can see, examine, and try a few things. Feel free to bring some of your own stuff along too.

I've set the event length to 2 hours, but I'm willing to go an hour or two past that if anybody wants to hang around and ask questions, cover something in more detail, try something, etc.

What you should bring: water, possibly snacks, maybe a rain jacket in case the weather turns, and any gear you may want to discuss or get help with.

If you have questions or suggestions regarding this Meetup event, feel free to reply to this event notice or message me directly!
