Easy, Beginner Paddle on Lake Attitash in Amesbury

Details

Come join us for a super-easy paddle on Lake Attitash, the largest of the three lakes in Amesbury, MA. After launching from the small beach area to the right of the motor boat launch, we'll paddle in a simple clockwise loop around the lake. We'll paddle up Back River to explore for a bit, before we return to the main part of the lake. Our lunch break will be at a small, no longer used public beach at the far end of the lake. Total distance for this trip is approximately 4-1/2 miles round trip. This will be a slow, meandering type of paddle. Let's take our time and relax while we're out on the water. We've seen lots of swans on this lake on previous paddles, so keep an eye out for them. Afterwards, we can retire to Hodgie's Ice Cream Shop, located just down the road (on Route 110), for some delicious homemade ice cream.

Plan to arrive early, so you'll be ready to launch promptly at 10:30 am.

IMPORTANT: Lake Attitash stretches across both Merrimac and Amesbury. Attitash Ave, the access point for the lake, is located in Merrimac, not Amesbury. Be sure to note this when using your GPS. When you're traveling on Route 110, look for the Merrimac Bait & Tackle Shop on one side of the road and Short's Express and Merrimac Liquors on the other. Attitash Ave. is located between these businesses. See the photos below in the photos section.

Wildlife to see: There are almost always swans to see on this lake, along with Canada geese and the occasional blue heron. When I was here last summer, I saw a family of swans that included at least a half dozen babies. Also saw lots of redwing blackbirds.

Bathrooms/Port-a-Potties: There is usually a port-a-potty stationed at the lake during the summer months.
