Paddle the Nashua River from Groton to Pepperell

Details

Join us for a relaxed, easy paddle on the Nashua River, starting in Groton, MA and then heading down to the dam in Pepperell, where we'll take out, stretch our legs, and have a bite to eat (bring lunch or a snack) before our return trip. This will be a SLOW, lazy exploration of the Nashua River as it passes through the J. Harry Rich State Forest. Total distance: approximately 6 - 7 miles. Any boat is OK for this paddle.

We'll be launching from the Petapawag Boat Launch on Nod Rod, Groton. There is ample parking for the group. Drive up to the put-in, drop your boat and gear as quickly as you can, then find a parking spot.

The section of the river that we'll be paddling is called Pepperell Pond. The dam upstream backs the river up into a large, pond-like area with lots of islands and inlets to explore. There's usually plenty of wildlife to see on the Nashua river, so keep your eyes open for swans, muskrats, beaver, minks, etc. You might even see an eagle or two!

Wearing a lifejacket (PFD) is mandatory when paddling with us.

For GPS Users: If you key 97 Nod Road, Groton MA, into your GPS you should get close to the road that leads to the boat ramp. That's the house nearest to the put-in area. Look for the dirt road to the boat launch site. See the Google map in the photos section for details.

Johnson's is an old-fashioned drive-in restaurant and dairy bar that's been in operation since 1946. If it feels like a good day for an ice cream, we may indulge ourselves after the paddle!
