CWC Write-In at the Oakland Museum of California
Oakland Museum of California, 1000 Oak St, Oakland, CA, USJoin California's oldest writing club for a monthly 6-hour write-in with camaraderie and accountability!
WHERE: The Oakland Museum of California. The big beautiful building has a bigger and more beautiful garden with lots of seats and tables and places to write. Please choose any publicly accessible spot in the garden or in the Cafe. The host is usually in the cafe or the picnic benches by the water lilies pond. Check in with the host, who will likely have a CWC sign on the table.
HOW MUCH: This is a free event. While the museum charges a price for admission to the exhibits, there is no charge to use the Café or the gardens. Do buy lunch, drink, or something nice at the gift shop. We love OMCA!
WHEN: Second Saturdays, 12-5pm. Come for as little or as much of that time as you like. Find a space and write! Socialize respectfully! If someone is too busy to talk, no worries, shut up and write!
At 3:30 pm, we gather together so we can share what we have written. We usually meet behind the cafe, and the host will always check that spot if for some reason the reading location moves.
BRING: 1) your favorite writing tools, such as a pen and paper or a laptop, whatever is portable. 2) a warm jacket, blanket, or hoodie, if you chose to write outside in the spacious and glorious gardens in winter, or a hat and sunscreen in the summer. 3) a pillow or cushion, if that will make you more comfortable to sit and write, and 4) lunch money or a bag lunch/snacks to help you power through.

The Seduction of AI for Writing
Gilman Brewery, 912 Gilman Street, Berkeley, CA, USAbout the Keynote Speaker
Perhaps the most transformative technology of our lifetime, Generative AI is becoming de rigueur in a rapidly-expanding set of human activities, with writing at the fore. AI can produce certain written content amazingly quickly and shockingly well. For its efficiency and quick creation alone, use of AI is seductive. But there are downsides. Impacts range from threatened content ownership to homogenization, loss of authenticity, and more. In this workshop, we explore the pearls and perils of AI and discuss how to adjust our mindset for suitable use of AI that preserves or elevates human dignity and creativity.About Larry Ebert
Larry Ebert is an instructor at the University of San Francisco and Golden Gate University as well as a leadership and innovation consultant, researcher, systems thinker, author, and public speaker. Larry has an abiding interest in the human impacts of AI, exploring the impact of AI on the arts, in education, and across business. He is currently researching the impact of AI on human critical thinking and creative thinking skills. He has recently published chapters that include ""Systems Thinking in an Age of AI"" for a book, ""AI and Consciousness,"" and ""The Promise and Perils of AI in the Arts"" for the book, ""The World Remade by Artificial Intelligence."" THE CALIFORNIA WRITERS CLUB was started by a group of community-minded writing professionals in the early 1900s. They met informally until 1909, when the Club was founded, with Austin Lewis as its first president. The Berkeley Branch is the founding branch of the statewide Club, which now has 19 branches and around 2000 members throughout California. We are the third oldest writers’ club in the country, celebrating over a century serving Bay Area writers.
The CWC is a nonprofit professional organization open to writers in every genre and at every level of experience, from novice to published. Our mission is to educate writers of all abilities in the craft and business of writing. Our purpose is to promote fellowship and to provide practical information that supports all members in achieving their publishing goals.
Our writer’s motto, “Sail on!” is from Joaquin Miller’s poem, Columbus.3 attendees
