This is how the class begins.
We open the class by tuning in with three repetitions of the Adi mantra:
"Ong Namo Guru Dev Nameh"
= "I bow to the One Infinite Creative Wisdom, I bow to the Divine teacher within".
This mantra tunes us into our highest divine wisdom (or higher Self). It is always chanted at the beginning of a Kundalini yoga class.
Then, we chant the Mangala Charn Mantra three times too:
"Ad Guray Nameh, Jugad Guray Nameh, Sat Guray Nameh, Siri Guru Devay Nameh
= "I bow to the primal Guru, I bow to the Truth that has existed throughout the ages, I bow to the True Wisdom, I bow to the Great Divine Wisdom."
If you prefer to tune in with your own prayers for guidance and protection during the class, then this is fine.
Thereafter, we practice different small exercises to warm up the body, or a short series of exercises for a specific purpose (these are optional).
Next, we do a specific sequence of exercises -called "Kriya" (which means "to be in motion" in Sanskrit) that works towards a particular outcome.
Kriya practice initiates a sequence of physical and mental changes that affect the body, mind, and spirit.
There are kriyas to support the liver, balance the glandular system, stimulate the pituitary, and more. Utilising Kriyas can improve energy levels, improve digestion, reduce common ailments and illnesses, and bring about better bodily awareness..
At the end of the main Kriya , a deep relaxation on the back (shavasana) allows you to integrate all the yoga done (very important).
Finally, we will do a meditation, which helps reduce stress; helps you be more present, and unlocks your full potential.
The class ends with the song "The Long Time Sun Shine":
May the Long Time Sun Shine Upon You, All Love Surround You and The Pure Light Within You Guide Your Way On (chanted twice);
- Followed by the mantra: "Sat Naam" (chanted three times) = "I am Truth / Truth is my identity" (=We are all one in essence).
For beginners and intermediate levels.
