Theatrical Artistic Direction: What even is it? (Intro to Directing)

Hey you—yeah, you! Ever been curious about theatre, but not sure where to start… or how deep it really goes?
Come hang out with CBC Theatre’s Drama Club for a relaxed, welcoming space where anyone can drop in, chat, and explore all sides of theatre.

This week, we’re exploring the Artistic Direction—how to bring a script to life on stage (or elsewhere!). Whether you’ve dreamed of directing your own production or just want to understand how directors shape performances, this session is for you!

What to Expect:

  1. 🎭 Introductions and Announcements
Start with a warm welcome, brief introductions, and an overview of the session.
  2. 🎬 Theater Spotlight and Reflection
Watch and analyze a short scene. Discuss the director’s choices—blocking, pacing, and character interactions—and reflect on how those elements influence the performance.
  3. 🎭 Subject of the Day: Directing Fundamentals
Learn the key responsibilities of a director! We’ll cover blocking, working with actors, setting the tone, and translating a script into a dynamic stage performance. Engage in hands-on exercises to explore these concepts in action.
  4. 🎬 Interactive Staging Activity
Break into groups to direct a short scene! Experiment with staging, movement, and character dynamics, then showcase your work for discussion and feedback.
  5. 🎭 Debrief and Wrap-Up (5 minutes)
Reflect on what you learned and leave with practical ideas for stepping into a directing role.

Whether you’re an aspiring playwright, an actor curious about writing, or someone who simply loves theater, this session is designed to inspire and spark your creativity.
