- Happy Hour and Ice Skating!!!- WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG?Gallery Bar and Cognac Room, Los Angeles, CA
This is a yearly annual event we lead.
This year will go to DTLA for it.
The concept is really simple. . .
Around the holidays some outdoor ice rinks open around town.We pick a Low Class or No Class watering hole near by to one of the rinks and meet there for Happy Hour. Then . . . we head out to go Ice Skate.
What's The Worst That Can Happen?
The reality is . . . not too much . . . Many folks decide the indoor and warm social beats out cold and slippery ice.
Even so . . . we tried.
So each year we try it again . . . with the hope of idiots on ice. Let's make this year different and really get out there and have proper folly occur.
The Bar: The Gallery Bar located at Biltmore Hotel 506 Grand Avenue
The Rink: Pershing Square 532 South Olive StreetWHERE? This event is a Two Part event. The Bar, and The Ice.
7 to 11 PM @ The Bar. If you are going to stay at the bar.
7 to 9 PM @ The Bar if doing Ice Skating.
9 to 11 PM @ The Ice Rink if doing Ice SkatingThe Concept:
- Get there by 7 and socialize.
- At 9 PM head across the street to The Ice Rink.

Depart for LA via Train OR Or Fly or Drive back - Day 9 Tue, Jan 2 Fort Stockton, TX to Los Angeles 1000mi 15hrs
Rest of the long drive home
Let's break down "the why."
Why this time of year? The time between Christmas and New Years is filled with days off. You can do this trip without taking too many days off.Why this route (compared to Southwest or up the CA Coast)? The 10 keeps us out of any snow covered roads, and warmest weather.
Let's now talk about the "how" and the cost.
This is a 100% at cost and A La Carte trip.
Meaning . . . You pay for the level and type of accommodation that works for you or your co-pilots. As leads we are taking care of the itinerary and stops and places and essentially curating what we are doing. However whatever you actually wish to do . . . you pay for that direct. In other words there is no cost to us. No fee from us. No charge or cut. We are just travelers like you. This also means you can change and alter things as needed too.My recommend is a Van, Campervan. Or a small or large RV (rented).
The intend plan is to stay at RV parks each nite. They are easy to book and inexpensive. They have great bathrooms, common rooms, and laundry facilities. Easy in and out.I will have reservations at RV parks for us at the planned stops along the way.
If you want to drive your passenger car and rent hotels next to or next to those parks . . . that's fine.
Our RV park in New Orleans is about $90 a night (including taxes). Since this is the only place staying multiple nights, . . . and it is over NYE . . .
It includes:- Bar & Restaurant
- Guest Lodge (common area)
- Convenience Store
- Pool & Hot Tub
- Laundry machines
- WiFi
- Dog Park
- Horseshoe Pits, Cornhole and Other Games
- Fitness Center
Places along the way will be much less. Likely $60 or so
Let's say it averages $80 a night. For the 8 nights of the trip that's about $700 for accommodation. If you are carpooling with one person . . . that $350 to you.
If you rent a 5 person RV . . . That's $140 for accommodation. The savings there goes toward the rental and the gas.GAS:
LA to NoLA is about 2,000 miles (one way). If your car gets 36mpg. That's a total of 112 gallons of gas (round trip) At the current national average for gas . . . that is a total of about $420 in gas (for car not for RV)So if you are driving solo . . . you are looking at about $1200 (before food and any entry tickets (like Carlsbad Caverns).
2 in the car?. . . split in half. Or by three if you do that.Interested in renting a campervan? Kuga, Escape or Indie are good places to start. Kuga looks to be less expensive.
They sleep 2 to 5 persons- https://www.travellers-autobarnrv.com/campervan-rv-rentals/
- https://www.escapecampervans.com/campervans/
- https://indiecampers.com/rent-an-rv/search?from=los-angeles&to=los-angeles&start=2023-12-23&end=2024-01-02 (they have a small RV option
You are looking at about $700 to $1,100 for a Van Rental.
Divide by three people. By 4 people if you get the small RVInterested?
IF you are interested in joining . . . FILL THIS OUT https://forms.gle/AdMHtrg2NKtG3Yt98Also . . . Here is the thumbnail of the trip https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/116kB9zeig7Ku8kvfzAnrBKbdvhoJ6B4F1UVPaSpLCgA/edit?usp=sharing
