Collecting Stories in Other Languages
Details
The format is very different for this month.
We are meeting at Bo's Coffee right next to the entrance of the Filinvest building in IT Park.
We will still do introductions where we share our target language and what language we want to help with. We'll do a brief pairing up session where we make sure that matches get each other's contact info for future language exchanges.
After that, it's onto discussing a paper by Luke Schroeder, a linguist who has lived with the Sama people who speak Sinama for over 15 years.
We will be discussing "The Collection and Dissemination of Sama Stories" which can be found here. I'll start off with a summary of the reading, and then open it up to discussion.
To have an idea of what Sinama sounds like, check out this video of phrases having to do with greetings and leavings.
Does your native language have a short story that you'd like to share of about 5 to 10 minutes in length? Does it rhyme? Participants will be given an opportunity to share a story from a native language to the group.
