Tonight we will explore traditions of Brigid, the Goddess, Saint, and midwife of Spring, and her counterpart ... the Calliach, ancient energy of Winter, bringer of storms, builder of mountains, and protector of wild animals.

Brigid is a goddess and saint beloved by both pagans and Christians in Ireland, Scotland, Wales, the US and around the world. She is also known as a triple goddess of healing, of fire & the forge, and of poetry & inspiration. There are groups of "flamekeepers of Brigid" who take turns lighting a candle for Brigid in their homes on a cycle of 20 days.

The Calliach, on the other hand, is not much beloved by anyone. But she is a power of nature which we need to respect. Without her cold breath, we will be facing more heat, more drought, more windswept fires.
In Scotland, she created the mountains, including the Paps of Jura. And in Ireland, she dropped the stones that were shaped by the ancient pre-Celtic peoples into cairns that served both to honor the dead and to mark the cycles of the sun's rebirth every year. We will discover and journey into one of these cairns at Loughcrew, Ireland, which has marked the Equinox sunrise for over 5000 years. It is one of the Hollow Hills, filled with Earth Light, twice a year.

The Equinox this year is Friday, March 20. It is a time for finding balance in our lives. A few days later, March 25, is the ancient holiday known as Lady's Day. In ancient times, pre-Roman, pre-Greek, it was the beginning of the New Year. In Celtic and British lands, this day is remembered as Lady's Day. Oddly, it is sacred to both St. Mary and the Calliach.

Note: If you are interested, sign up for this session on Friday. I won't be available for a Sunday session, I'm going to see the Irish band Solas, live on Sunday.
